Sleep: It's Not Just Quantity, It's Quality Too!

The Importance of Sleep

Why Do Kids Need Sleep?

Depending on age, kids require a certain amount of sleep to be well-rested. Check out the table below to see the usual hours of sleep per age range:

However, most kids do not get enough sleep. Without adequate rest, kids are prone to be cranky and tired which could affect their performance.

Here are some ways poor sleep can impact a child:

  • They might not pay attention or follow directions.

  • They can become moody from being tired.

  • They can be more accident-prone from being less attentive.

On the other hand, good sleep health can show improvements in

  • Attention and behavior

  • Learning

  • Mental and physical health

  • And more!

What Are Some Ways Kids Can Sleep Better?

While the number of hours of sleep matters, it is not only about the number. Kids must also get good-quality sleep!

Here are some tips for kids to get proper sleep:

  • Sleeping at a consistent time every night and waking up at a consistent time every morning

  • Avoid watching TV, using the computer and other electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime (Using dark mode reduces the exposure to blue light that can keep us up)

  • Don’t drink caffeinated beverages like energy drinks, tea, colas, and caffeine-containing sodas, especially later in the day and at night

  • Eat a well-balanced diet

  • Many people find that a glass of milk helps them go to sleep, and don’t forget to brush your teeth afterward!

  • Sleep when the sun is down and get up when the sun is up!
