While infant botulism is rare, it is a serious illness that requires immediate medical attention.

The good news is that knowing the facts can help you protect your baby. In this blog, we will explain what infant botulism is, cover recent cases, the symptoms to watch for, and practical steps parents can take to prevent any risk.

What is Botulism? Why Is It Dangerous?

Botulism is a serious illness caused by a harmful substance (a toxin) that attacks the body’s nerves. The toxin is produced by bacteria found naturally in many places. These bacteria produce spores. The bacteria themselves rarely make people sick. As spores grow into bacteria, the process produces toxins, and those toxins are what make people sick.

Spores are protective coatings that allow bacteria to survive harsh conditions. The spores themselves are generally harmless. However, under certain conditions, especially in low-oxygen environments, they can produce harmful toxins (CDC, 2026). These harmful toxins cause five clinical presentations of botulism, including infant botulism.

Botulism is a risk in home-canned foods. The canning process removes all the oxygen from the jar, creating a low-oxygen environment that the bacterium loves. The bacteria can be killed, and the toxins can be inactivated by heat, which is the whole reason for pasteurization.

Another low-oxygen environment where bacteria and spores are universally present is soil, which is why carefully washing fruits and vegetables is so important when you’re feeding them to your baby.

This also goes to the heart of the reason why the most common cause of infant botulism, which is unpasteurized honey, could be completely avoided by using pasteurized honey instead.

Symptoms of infant botulism may appear within a few days or several weeks after exposure.

Watch for:

Constipation

Poor feeding or difficulty sucking

Weak or “floppy” muscles

Poor head control

Trouble swallowing

A weak cry or less facial expression

Difficulty breathing

If your baby has any of these symptoms, seek medical care right away. Early treatment is important and can help improve recovery.

Why Is Infant Botulism in the News? Understanding the Current Formula Investigation

An outbreak of four confirmed infant botulism illnesses across three states is currently under investigation by the FDA and CDA, who are working with state agencies. They identified four type A toxin infections among infants who consumed Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula.

To learn more about what happened, state health officials are testing opened cans of formula collected from the homes of the sick infants. So far, the California Department of Public Health has found Clostridium botulinum bacteria in one opened can of formula from a home where a baby became ill.

Additional testing is underway to determine how the contamination occurred and whether any other products may be affected.

Because the investigation is still ongoing, health officials have not yet determined the exact source of the contamination. The FDA will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

News like this can be worrying for parents, but it is important to remember that infant botulism is very rare. Watch for: If your baby has any of these symptoms, seek medical care right away. Early treatment is important and can help improve recovery. Why Is Infant Botulism in the News? Understanding the Current Formula Investigation An outbreak of four confirmed infant botulism illnesses across three states is currently under investigation by the FDA and CDA, who are working with state agencies. Knowing what infant botulism is, how to recognize its signs and symptoms, and the steps you can take to help prevent it can help you make informed decisions for your baby’s health.
