If we don’t take care of our teeth properly, germs in our mouth might cause inflammation, which could lead to other sicknesses including heart problems. One way to take care of our teeth is to prevent cavities by using fluoride varnish. What is Fluoride Varnish? Fluoride varnish is a dental treatment that can help prevent tooth decay. It is made with fluoride, which is a mineral that is already in our toothpaste and water! It makes the outside of our teeth stronger. How Often Can It Be Done? We can get this varnish 2 to 4 times a year, depending on how likely it is for our teeth to get a cavity. We are developmentally more at risk for cavities in childhood and adolescence. Remember, even with this treatment, we might still get cavities sometimes. But if we also brush and floss our teeth as we are supposed to, it can help keep our teeth healthy! How Much Does It Cost? It is covered if you are eligible for Medi-Cal and if your child is younger than 6 years old. It can be done up to three times a year.
